Meet Pooja Albert - our new and incoming MYP and DP Mathematics Teacher!

Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?

Hello WIS community!

I'm thrilled to join WIS! With over 10 years of experience teaching math across various curriculums, I have a deep love for fostering a love of learning in students. I'm constantly seeking new and engaging ways to bring math to life in the classroom.

But beyond the classroom walls, my passions extend far and wide. I'm a culinary explorer in the kitchen, a devoted plant parent nurturing a mini-jungle, and a constant adventurer – whether it's through documentaries or real-life journeys.

Speaking of adventures, Namibia awaits!  This first international school experience has me giddy! I can't wait to immerse myself in the local culture, explore landscapes that would make a fractal jealous, and maybe even attempt to cook something Namibian that doesn't involve questionable unidentified tubers.

Importantly, I also share WIS's commitment to pastoral care.  I believe in creating a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential. It's incredibly rewarding to see them blossom not just academically, but also as well-rounded individuals.

I'm excited to contribute to the WIS community and eager to learn from the amazing WIS team as well!

Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?

I believe education is like a delicious pizza—it's most satisfying when everyone gets to choose their favorite toppings! By connecting math to students' individual interests, we create a pie (or rather, pi!) they're excited to devour. Teacher enthusiasm is the secret sauce, the extra sprinkle that makes the whole thing taste amazing. This fosters a positive and supportive environment where students feel safe to experiment with flavors, ask for seconds (questions!), and share with their classmates (collaborate!). Ultimately, a strong bond between teacher and student transforms the process of teaching and learning into a joyful and enriching feast for the mind!

People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?

Fuelled by a passion for nurturing young minds, I embarked on my educational journey with a Bachelor's in Education. Thinking strategically, I then bolstered my skills with a Master's in Commerce and a sprinkle of certifications (PGCE, CICTL and a lot more ) to keep things interesting. Technology is my ever-present ally, and I'm a lifelong learner, devouring workshops and webinars.

But the true gems of knowledge? My students! Their curiosity and creativity keep me on my toes.  I've also been incredibly fortunate to have amazing educational leaders and mentors guide me at every phase.  Their support has been instrumental in shaping me into the well-rounded educator I am today.

Professionally, Mumbai's schools (Podar & Oberoi International) have been my playground, providing invaluable experiences.

What do you do when you aren't teaching?

Beyond the classroom, I transform into a culinary explorer, whipping up delicious dishes in the kitchen! Think of it as a tasty adventure, where every recipe is a new equation to solve. And speaking of growing things, I'm also a devoted plant parent, nurturing my little green friends to life. It's a constant learning process, just like teaching – you never stop discovering new things!

When I'm not unlocking culinary secrets or tending to my mini-jungle, you might find me glued to a documentary, soaking up knowledge through captivating visuals. Exploring new cultures and places is another passion of mine, whether it's virtually through these documentaries or venturing out on real-life adventures. There's a whole world waiting to be discovered, and I'm always up for the challenge!

Oh, and did I mention I'm a board game fanatic? There's nothing quite like a good game night with friends, making new connections, and maybe even learning a new strategy or two (perfect for those math skills!). Plus, some board games are beautifully designed with amazing artwork, which is another visual treat!

But wait, there's more! When the mood strikes, I unleash my inner artist, creating unique craft and art pieces.  It's a fantastic way to unwind and express myself creatively.  Maybe we can even find some inspiration for art projects together in the WIS community!

Why did you choose WIS?

WIS's vision of empowering "independent, inquiring, and self-motivated citizens" completely aligns with my passion for education. Their focus on a stimulating environment with "academic excellence, cultural diversity, and active social responsibility" is incredibly inspiring, and the "inquiring, discovering, and experimenting" approach to learning resonates deeply with my teaching style.

Having met the leadership virtually, I'm even more excited to meet everyone in person and learn from this amazing team.

What truly sealed the deal for me is that WIS, as my first international school experience, offers a world of exploration – both for my students and for me!

I can't wait to contribute to this journey of learning together

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

I'm a toolbox filled with teaching tricks, and I'm always looking for new tools to add to the collection!
