Meet Deirdre Leonard - DP Mathematics Applications and Interpretation SL & MYP Mathematics Teacher

What would you like us to know about you?

I'm an American educator with a passion for exploring different cultures. Having lived abroad for six years—three each in Bangkok, Thailand, and Doha, Qatar—I've developed a profound love for international experiences. Embracing the role of a teacher and traveler, I'm eagerly looking forward to immersing myself in Namibia's culture, both as an educator and an explorer.

Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?

As a mathematics teacher, I believe that engagement is key to success in mathematics.  I want my students to love math, as much as I do.  I enjoy inquiry-based lessons that spark the student’s interest in the content.  Students can expect a classroom that encourages creativity in math and focuses on the strengths of the students while encouraging them to take risks.

People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences.  What and where have you studied? What and where have you worked?

I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education.  After graduating, I worked in Tacoma, USA for several years teaching math and a little bit of history.  I chose to move to Thailand, teach at the Thai Chinese International School in Bangkok. I started teaching at SEK International School in Doha, Qatar a well-known group of schools from Spain.

I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Pacific Lutheran University in the US. My teaching journey began in Tacoma, USA, where I taught mathematics and a little bit of history. Transitioning to international teaching, I had the privilege of teaching at both the Thai Chinese International School in Bangkok and the esteemed SEK International School in Doha, Qatar.

What do you do when you aren’t teaching?

Soccer. In my free time, I love playing, coaching and watching soccer. I have travelled to several men’s and women’s World Cups and look forward to potentially volunteering for the next world cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.  I had a wonderful time volunteering in Qatar for the last World Cup. I have also recently learned how to play padel, a new sport that is big in the Middle East.

Why did you choose WIS?

Namibia has always held a special place in my heart ever since I visited during my university years, igniting my interest in international teaching. The exceptional reputation of WIS within the international teaching community made it an ideal choice, especially when a mathematics teaching position opened up.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

Although I will be travelling to Namibia alone, my family is very excited to visit me.  Especially my twin sister and my two older brothers.  I look forward to exploring the country to be a tour guide for my family.  I love learning about new cultures and making new friends along the way.
