In the Primary School, we offer French and Portuguese as an additional language. We believe that the purpose of teaching languages is to give students exposure to, and understanding of, other languages as a means to communicate. This supports a community of lifelong learners who will develop oral and written linguistic skills and understanding to communicate successfully and function in a multilingual global society. The PYP Language teachers employ the communicative approach in the classroom, where the students are not simply learning the language, but also applying and using it in real life and authentic ways. The cultural experiences help broaden their vision as world citizens. Learning another language can open a door of global understanding and support the critical thinking skills that are necessary to discern and appreciate diverse differences.
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart' ~Nelson Mandela~
