Curriculum
What is IGCSE?
IGCSE stands for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a curriculum for students in Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10) with examinations administered by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) at the end of Year 11 for students aged 16+. From 2008 onwards WIS will be the only centre in Namibia fully registered and accredited with CIE.
IGCSE is a tested, internationally recognized and accepted qualification. At the moment it provides us at WIS with an externally set standard which enables us to compare ourselves with other local and international schools. It serves as a good preparation for further study in the I.B. programme and other programmes preparing students for their entrance to universities.
IGCSE caters for a broad range of subjects covering five groups viz. Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities and Creative, Vocational and Technical.
To obtain a full I.C.E (International Certificate of Education), a student should write and pass seven subjects. These subjects should cover all of the five groups including two languages and a seventh subject from any of the five groups. In the past IGCSE Examination held in June 2007 70% of our students received 5 or more A* - C grades and 4 students passed their examination with distinction (5 or more A*/A grades).
Students generally have 9 subjects which give them a wide background and enable them to make the best choices for their further studies. We do also encourage students to take creative and/or technical subjects in order to educate focusing on the mere academic side of their education.
