| An Introduction to Windhoek International School |
 |
Windhoek International School (WIS) runs a successful educational programme from Kindergarten to Year 13. It provides a high quality education service leading to internationally recognized examination qualifications (IGCSE and IB) giving students access to higher education in countries all over the world. Not only does it have a strong connection with the IBO and Cambridge International Examinations, it is also accredited with CIS.
WIS opened in 1991 and rented classrooms from a Namibian government school while it built its own facility. The school was designed to resemble an African village with spacious modern classrooms spread over a large campus. WIS has a music room, two colorful art rooms and a drama room where students are taught the arts. There is a sports hall and a multi purpose outdoor sports court with a sports field. There is a library and an ICT lab. There are three equipped science labs and a language centre for English, German, French and Portuguese. Assemblies and performances are held in the large auditorium which seats 250 people.
There are 325 students representing 40 different countries at WIS ranging from 2 year olds in Toddlers to the 18/19 year olds in Year 13. Being a relatively small school, there is a very caring relationship between the students. WIS has had five IBDP graduate years and in each year, students have had excellent results. In the 2006/2007 academic year WIS students did very well and have moved on to study in South Africa, Finland, Canada and the UK. Many of the parents at WIS represent the diplomatic community of Namibia and the professional and business sector in Windhoek and other Namibian towns. They have high academic aspirations for their children, who themselves are highly motivated.
Our highly qualified teaching staff supported by a dedicated technical, administrative and maintenance staff. The teaching staff, recruited both locally and abroad, are well qualified, experienced and highly motivated. Staff-student relationships are excellent and are based on a strong sense of positive mutual respect.
WIS enjoys tremendous support from its parental body, known as the Parents teacher Association. The parents assist with the tuck shop, social functions, fund raising and helping new families adjust to WIS and life in Windhoek.
