WIS LIBRARY COLLECTION

The library at WIS houses over 11,000 books, 400 multi-media items (videos, DVDs, CDs) and has three PCs linked to the school network and the internet, all providing the WIS community access to an incredible amount of information.

INFORMATION LITERACY

The amazing ongoing information revolution has changed the way all of us access, process and use information. Information literacy is regarded as the set of skills we all require to be competent, independent and critical users of information.

WIS library offers programmes of information literacy instruction to primary and secondary students.

READING FOR PLEASURE

There is a range of fiction for all age groups and reading abilities right from age 3 to 18.

We have picture books, easy readers, chapter books and a large collection of teen fiction. We also subscribe to 21 magazine titles providing subject information and leisure reading.

Primary classes come to the library once a week for story telling and a range of activities centred around literature appreciation and information literacy. Classes can also book the library for additional sessions for further research or instruction.

LITERATURE PROMOTION

Book Week takes place at the end of September. A different theme is chosen each year and literature and literacy-based activities are organized around the theme. Regular events include the Readathon, where students, classes and School houses compete to see who can read the most during Book Week. Guest speakers are invited into class and many parents and family come in and read to primary classes. The week ends with the Primary Costume Parade, a perennial favourite.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

WIS library hosts a large collection of resources for teachers - for day to day teaching and on-going professional development.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT

The library has a large number of books in languages other than English to support mother tongue learning. There are many fiction and non-fiction titles in German, French, Dutch, Flemish, Spanish and a few selected titles in local Namibian languages such as Oshiwambo and Khoekhoe.

LIBRARY STAFF

The library is staffed by one full-time, professional librarian and a
part-time library assistant.
